Heatwave Gardening in the UK: Why Petunias Struggle in Extreme Heat (And How Easy It Is to Refresh Your Water Butt Planters)

The recent UK heatwave has been one of the hottest many gardeners can remember, with temperatures climbing to 38°C in some parts of the country. While many of us have enjoyed the sunshine, our gardens haven't always felt the same.

If you've noticed your petunias wilting, flowering less, or looking tired despite regular watering, you're certainly not alone. Even the healthiest plants can struggle when temperatures remain unusually high for days or weeks at a time.

At Rainwater Terrace, we recently experienced this ourselves. A few of the flowers in one of our water butt planters had simply reached the end of what they could cope with after weeks of intense sunshine. Rather than seeing it as a failure, we saw it as the perfect opportunity to refresh our display and share some useful gardening advice.

Why Do Petunias Struggle During a Heatwave?

Petunias are loved for their vibrant colours and long flowering season, making them one of the UK's favourite summer bedding plants. However, they are not immune to heat stress.

Once temperatures regularly exceed 27°C (80°F), petunias can begin to show signs of stress, including:

  • Wilting during the hottest part of the day

  • Reduced flowering

  • Faded flower colours

  • Dry or scorched foliage

  • Increased water demand

  • Faster compost drying in containers

Although watering helps, intense sunlight and prolonged high temperatures cause moisture to evaporate much faster from both the compost and the leaves. Container-grown plants are particularly vulnerable because the compost heats up quickly, placing additional pressure on the roots.

The recent UK weather has been significantly hotter than we would normally expect for this time of year, meaning even experienced gardeners have seen some of their bedding plants struggle.

Container Gardening During Hot Weather

Growing flowers in containers offers fantastic flexibility, but it also means paying closer attention during periods of extreme heat.

Simple ways to help your plants include:

  • Water early in the morning or later in the evening.

  • Feed flowering plants regularly to encourage fresh blooms.

  • Remove faded flowers by deadheading.

  • Check containers daily during hot weather.

  • Use harvested rainwater wherever possible to reduce mains water usage.

If some plants don't recover, don't worry. Replacing individual plants is often the quickest and most effective way to keep your displays looking colourful throughout summer.

A Simple Way to Protect Your Flowers During Extreme Heat

One of the unique advantages of Rainwater Terrace clip-on planters is that they don't have to stay attached to your water butt all day if the weather becomes exceptionally hot.

If the forecast predicts prolonged periods of intense sunshine or another UK heatwave, simply unclip the planter and move it into a lightly shaded area during the hottest part of the day. Once the temperatures begin to ease later in the afternoon or evening, the planter can be clipped back onto your Rainwater Terrace water butt in just a few seconds.

This simple step can help reduce heat stress on delicate flowering plants by protecting them from relentless afternoon sun, slowing moisture loss from the compost and reducing the risk of flowers wilting or becoming scorched.

It's a practical feature that's particularly useful during the increasingly frequent periods of hot weather we're now seeing in the UK. While no plant is immune to extreme temperatures, giving your flowers a few hours of shade during the hottest part of the day may help them continue flowering for longer and keep your displays looking their best throughout the summer.

Why Trailing Petunias Work Best in Water Butt Planters

One question we're often asked is which flowers work best in our Rainwater Terrace clip-on planters.

Our answer is almost always the same...

Choose trailing varieties.

Trailing petunias naturally spill over the sides of the planter, creating a soft cascade of flowers that complements the shape of the water butt beautifully. They also produce a fuller display, making even a small planting area look abundant.

Combined with regular feeding and watering, trailing petunias can continue producing flowers for months.

Refreshing Our Rainwater Terrace Planter

After noticing several flowers had struggled in the heat, we decided it was time for a quick refresh.

A visit to B&M Stores proved worthwhile, where we picked up:

  • Two trays of eight trailing petunias

  • Miracle-Gro plant feed

Even better, the petunias were on offer at £7.50 per tray or two trays for £12, making it an affordable way to give our planter a completely new lease of life.

Within minutes, the tired display had been transformed with fresh colour ready to grow on throughout the rest of the summer.

We'll be sharing updates over the coming weeks so everyone can see how these new plants establish themselves.

Rainwater Harvesting Makes Summer Gardening Easier

One advantage of having a Rainwater Terrace water butt is having a ready supply of stored rainwater available for watering containers when the weather turns dry.

Harvested rainwater is naturally soft, free from chlorine and an excellent choice for many garden plants. During long dry spells, collecting rainwater whenever showers arrive can help reduce reliance on mains water while supporting a more sustainable garden.

Combined with attractive clip-on planters, your water butt becomes more than just a water storage solution it becomes a beautiful feature that works hard all year round.

Don't Worry if Your Flowers Have Struggled

Every gardener loses a few plants from time to time, especially during exceptional weather.

This summer's prolonged heat has tested gardens across the UK, and replacing a handful of tired bedding plants is perfectly normal. With a few fresh trailing petunias, regular feeding and harvested rainwater, your containers can quickly become the colourful centrepiece of your garden once again.

At Rainwater Terrace, we believe gardening should be enjoyable, practical and sustainable. Whether you're growing flowers, herbs, strawberries or vegetables, our innovative water butt planters make it easy to combine beautiful planting with smart rainwater harvesting.

If you've refreshed your own planters after the recent heatwave, we'd love to see your results. Share your photos with us on Instagram and Facebook and inspire fellow gardeners to keep growing, whatever the British weather has in store.
